Grant's Tarleton

Grant McComb from Hillsboro, New Hampshire just finished building his own tiny house from Jay Shafer’s plans. He says, it turned out wonderful and I’ve been living in it for about 2 weeks now. I enjoyed building it so much that I’m going to
build another one.

The humanure toilet is working great. I’m using peat moss instead of sawdust and it seems to be working just fine. There is absolutely no odor at all. I chose peat moss because I can go to Home Depot and buy a big bag of it for $6.00. I don’t know where to get sawdust at.

I have a 10 gallon water heater for the sink and the shower that works beautiful. It acutally works better than the house I just moved out of. I have a garden hose coming from the land owner’s house for my water supply.

It took me less than 3 months to build the tiny house. I started in May of 2009. Feel free to call or email me if you have any questions or know anyone interested.

Thank you
Grant McComb

I will need to be building & live in one of these for a few years to recoop after loosing my shirt on a Spec House I built pre “Crash”. I would like to contact Grant, since he used more off “the shelf materials”. Like I have one of those tiny Rinnai Heaters I forgot I had!

So I’ve been wanting one of these houses for months now. I’ve actually been looking at picking up a chunk of land in Hillsboro, the next town over from where I work, and living “off grid” in one of these things. I’m doing my research and I decided that I’d like to contact somebody who has built one in the state of NH. So coincidently there’s already one in Hillsboro. Grant, how do I contact you so that I can find out some more info on these fascinating little homes?

    Hello!

We are engineering students at Northwestern University and we are working on a Tiny House project. We call ourselves team Casita. We would greatly appreciate if you could take a moment to take this survey that would assist in our project.

    Hi
I would like to have one of these tiny homes. I am presently unemployed and homeless. I have no resource to buy material to build a house myself, plus I do not know how to build anything, but with the material I will try to build a home it beat the streets. Thank you for your time. Sal Du

I would suggest contacting Tumbleweed and see if they offer some assistance along these lines. I am not connected with them directly and can not give that advice.

  10. Daniel says:

This is a Very nice build. I’m excited to build myself but still not sure of the rest of “life” will be very accomodating.

    Beautiful Work!

These projects fascinate me. But none of the ones I have viewed online have any provisions for AC, only heat?

  13. Linda Yborra says:

    Grant
I can nunderstand why your number is no longer published. I am in my mid 50s and planning for my retirement in about 2 years. I have been dreaming of building a tiny home but have yet to see one in person. If you would consider contacting me and letting me see your home, I would take you to dinner as a thank you. I am not a carpenter but am willing to try. I have no place to build such a thing just yet. Let me know if you are willing to meet. I rent a room in albany , new york.

  14. Em08 says:

Has anyone been successful at contacting Grant ? James H – have you found the land and home you want in Hillsboro ? Would love to talk about this. Thanks… Em

  15. Angelica says:

Samuel Mockbee and the tiny house movement Jay Shafer started has inspired my fiance and I to live “tiny” too! But first we’re going to build one for someone else, the POPOMO and document the entire process on our blog: http://www.thetinyhouseproject.com What an inspiration all of these tiny house sites have been!

  16. Grant Wagner says:

Beautiful house, and a great name. Us Grant’s gotta stick together.

I gotta ask though, how long did that white chair stay white with that (very cute) black cat lounging all over it?

  17. jennifer says:

    Hello,

I live in NH and I am wondering how many people(in NH) have gotten the “ok” to live in their tiny house 24/7 with a spetic and water hook up.

I am also wondering how you spung it to get the permit to do this.

Feel free to reply or even e mail me

Would love to do a tiny house but worried about not being allowed to by the state/towns

  18. Eric Schrader says:

What was the source of your chassis? Do you have other pictures showing the progress between Pic # 6 and # 7?

  19. Adam says:

I live in WI and was wondering how do I go about getting a permit for this small of a house? Most communities require a much larger home. Also, are there any resources you can suggest on “asking the right questions” when considering buying land and building a “tiny house” without risking the investment?
